River's Tornado 

June 20th, 1042

 

This Tornado took 4 lives of the Rivers family on a Saturday night in Mulvane.
  At the Height of the storm, witness's say it was four times the size as it appears in this picture.  This picture was taken about a mile away from the Old Hotel on Main Street.  The Tornado was about one mile North and East of Mulvane at 111th & Webb road.  Above photos were taken by Claud Giles.  Article out of Wichita Eagle paper.

Father: Charles W. Rivers Sr. 61, Jan. 1991 - 20 June, 1942

Mother: Pearl May (Devore) Rivers 59,  25 Oct. 1882 - 20 June, 1942

Daughter: Virgaline Rivers 27, 1915 - 20 June, 1942

Son: Charles Rivers Jr. 19,  1923 - 20 June, 1942

Fairview Cemetery, Kechi, Kansas

 

 

The City of Mulvane now owns this property.  The new City Swimming pool sits just to the east of where the old Rivers Home was. 
The area is virtually untouched, concrete still exists where the buildings were, even the steps to the front of the house remain.
